 I suspect I've discovered a pattern: if I replace both the username and
 password (retype in dialog box from scratch) and unclick "Save in
 Keychain" I can log in. I'll have to try more permutations, but there's
 certainly something going on here, as I've observed this same behavior on
 two different Mac OS X 10.4 computers.
