 this generally happens when i (mistakenly) leave the "add to keychain" box
 checked. ftp site wil then refuse connection and nothing I do (incl.
 unchecking this box, restarting programme etc.) will make it allow me to
 connect. so i fire up fetch 3 and this logs in first time, every time.

 so, for whatever reason your prog confuses the passwords or send some
 extra characters or something to cause the ftp servers to reject
 uname/pword combo.

 it is the ONLY reason i haven't paid my shareware fee yet, because apart
 from that it works well. one grip - i don't care about the files sizes on
 replaces - i would rather is skipped that step and was faster at allowing
 the re-upload to happen.
